UP TO DATE INFORMATION RE BOWLING CLUB FINALS 30TH AND 31ST AUGUST.
The finals at Subscription Bowling Club this year were played over two days. On Sunday the Three Wood final was played out between Ian Gallagher and David Lee with Ian coming out on top. Rick Gallagher had opposition in the Handicap final where he overcame a strong challenge from Tom Prescott.
The final game of the day was the Club Championship which was contested by Ian Gallagher and David Lee, the same duo who contested the first final. The game was close up to the half way point, and then Ian drew ahead and managed to maintain his lead to become the 2020 Club Champion.
On Monday the first final was the Veterans Trophy where David Lee met Rick Gallagher. David was ahead going into the latter stages of the game and despite a late fightback from Rick he finally produced the winning shot to win the game by a narrow margin.
The last final was the Jimmy Armstrong Pairs where Rick Gallagher and John Dawson fought off the challenge from Kevin Lightfoot and David Whitfield.
The final trophy of the season was for the most improved bowler, and this was presented to the surprised but very deserving David Whitfield. The trophies were presented by Lady President Julia Whittle ably assisted by Secretary Bob Banks. The games were watched by a wonderfully supportive and knowledgeable crowd of around thirty spectators who were treated to some magnificent bowling over two days in fine sunshine.
Thanks must go especially to Rick Gallagher and Bob Banks who took the initiative to organise the competitions so late in the season, and put in all the hard work to make them the great success they were. It made a very enjoyable end to the season which for the first few months had looked to be a season lost completely to the coronavirus pandemic. Thanks to all our members who have stayed loyal and supported the club throughout this difficult year. Stay safe and be happy, and we’ll see you all again next season when we’ll have a BBQ!!
We have been contacted by Bowls UK with regard to general fitness within the game of bowls, they have written as below.
" We've recently just published a huge guide on the health benefits of playing bowls. Along with handy tips and advice to help more senior players enjoy the game for many years to come".
